Why Koha?

Why Koha?

Koha means "gift" in Maori, the language of the indigenous people of New Zealand. While growing up in New Zealand, our co-founder Glyn Stephens was gifted the knowledge of beekeeping from his parents. His family-owned apiary was dedicated to breeding queen bees, and the five Stephens children gained an early appreciation for beekeeping. Koha acknowledges all those, living and lost, who provided teaching and support along our journey. We could not have made it this far without them, and so they are the true inspiration behind the name.

Our Team

Glyn grew up beekeeping with his parents in New Zealand. Inevitably, he acquired an early interest in nature and went on to study biology. While attending the University of Canterbury he met Shevelle, a Canadian biologist studying abroad. Her passion for the ocean and appetite for adventure were a good match for him. The pair eventually got married and spent time travelling before settling in Edmonton and acquiring some beehives of their own. They founded Koha Apiaries in 2016 when they noticed that their community had a keen interest in bees and a desire for local products they can trust. Read More
